Gallery 2, inspired woes

My new interest is Gallery 2. In general I am trying to get away from walled gardens, and specifically Flickr, which recently took down photos of mine in such a way as to make me want to host my own photos.

One of the things that Gallery is used for in my circle is integration into WordPress via WPG2, a plugin that ties them together.

I helped Justin set it up on his site a while ago, but I am not sure if he is using older versions of all the software. Kimi is also using it on her ?????? (hottokeiki) site (which you should visit immediately). I am setting it up on Susan’s site, but I am not really happy with how it is turning out. I am not particularly fond of the idea of creating a theme for its integration either.

Something I don’t quite understand is how there can be an entire site for what I feel compelled to call themed themes. Basically, instead of creating embedded themes that inherit styling and dimensions from the WordPress theme that is wrapping the page, many people create themes that go specifically with popular WordPress themes. That has to be a lot more work than is necessary to create a scalable solution.

Or maybe, just maybe I am too lazy…

“In the old days”, Wordpress and Gallery didn’t always integrate nicely together. Most of the problems were minor and cosmetic. Usually, just a few tweaks were need to the Wordpress theme to get things looking nice. Not everyone could figure out these tweaks and there were a lot of support requests related to this. Eventually, I thought it would be easy for a lot of people if I simply made the tweaks for them. I then made those tweaked (or optimized) Wordpress themes available for everyone. It’s not much effort on my part but hopefully it has saved a lot of time for others.

Nowadays, WPG2 is much better at integrating Wordpress and Gallery. I wouldn’t mind at all if my site soon becomes obsolete.
