Death Note, the Devil, and Pride

Through the wonders of the internets I came upon this post about students getting in trouble for writing in their Death Notes. Wow.

The interesting thing for me was that the Walter J Baird Middle School is in Lebanon. I lived in Lebanon for a while, so I was excited to hear of such dastardly deeds in that small town. Well, it turns out that their Lebanon is in Tennessee, not the one in Virginia. In looking up the school I found their website, besides being offensively designed and framed, has a logo/mascot that is a devil/demon on a shield with the word Pride across it.

The best part is the parent’s reaction, contrasted by the calm demeanor of the school’s principal.

I personally think that the idea behind Death Note is intriguing and really stupid. I am more interested in how people react to it than the actual anime. I think that maintaining a healthy living environment for children to grow in is important, and the irony of this video demonstrates how easy it is to miss the mark and sensationalize the issue.

A few observations:

  • They never mention Death Note (anime) in the segment.
  • The parent refers to the threat to his daughter: “I have a copy of what mine is.” He corrects himself.
  • The last line from the school employee is odd. Why is students mentioning death a top priority today?

Baffling.

That logo’s scarier than anything out of Death Note.
