From Bleach to Naruto, that is. We watched the last two weeks for both, and I have to say that I am a little disappointed at this cycle.
The current filler arc in Bleach is frustrating, but not for the normal reasons. Some of the plot points are good, and I feel they are being wasted. There have been a few scenes that I was excited by, only to be immediately let down as I remembered that it isn’t happening. I mean, the only way to make sense of the ongoing story is completely ignore filler and movies, which seem to be some of the worst fanfiction second rate writing I have seen, compared to the source material.
On the other hand, Naruto to plowing right through. I was thrown off by this, though it has been going strong for the last two months or so. I wasn’t sure how the series was going to bounce back from the Crystal User arc (or whatever it was called, seriously, it was horrible). The last episode actually had my eye widening in disbelief when they revealed what is happening with a particular character, and I am excited to see where that goes.
However, I can’t stop thinking that it is just going to get to a point when the pendulum starts back the other way, and Naruto goes into low budget filler mode as we return to the main Bleach story (and there is a lot going on there, a whole group of characters haven’t even showed up yet!). I have waited all summer for The Office and 30 Rock to come back, without a lull in interest. I wish that anime producers could work out a similar system, especially for shows that have caught up to the manga they are based on. I am looking at you, Studio Pierrot.
